Beautiful cranes of Izumi
This is a wonderful site especially for the wintering Cranes. Cranes are very photogenic here and you will find some other interesting bird species of Southern Japan here too.
Each winter, between 10000 and 12000 cranes of four species gather on the coastal agricultural land of Arasaki village. Commonest is the Hooded Crane, with 9000 birds or more each year, representing more than 80% of the world population of this species. Next comes the elegant White-naped Crane and there are usually somewhere between 1000 and 3000. About half of the world population of this species spends the winter here.
Regular, but far less common crane species here are Common Crane and the Sandhill Crane. Even rarer visitor is Demoiselle Crane from the steppes of Asia. Critically endangered Siberian Crane is very rare visitor here. Other interesting birds here includes Crested Kingfisher and Mandarin Duck.
